Halloween is soon upon us, which means a party is in the works! Planning a spectacular event for this holiday doesn’t have to be a terrifying experience. Follow our simple guide and we’ll show you how to throw a bash filled with chills and thrills.

The first thing you want to establish is your setting and mood. A huge part of making a memorable event is visual, so you’re going to want some theme-appropriate decorations. The following list should give you a good head start:

• Pumpkins – Nothing says Halloween more than pumpkins. Setting up small groups of pumpkins or other decorative gourds around your party space will bring an autumn tone to your setting. Carve a few pumpkins up and set them at the entrance; jack-o-lanterns are fantastic for greeting your guests.
• Sound Spooky – Music and other audio media are a great way to set the ambiance for a themed party. This can range from a simple playlist of Halloween-appropriate music to a full-blown soundtrack of creepy noises and sound effects. Whatever you choose, make sure its a background that represents the spirit of your event.
• Candles – Natural firelight creates an effect that’s almost impossible to duplicate through other means. Strategically placed candles will bring dancing shadows to your event, further enhancing the spooky feel.
• Accessories – Making random costume pieces available to guests can be a great way to get your guests to loosen up and enjoy themselves. A few masks, wigs and even plastic vampire fangs can get even the most serious guest in the holiday spirit.
• Cameras – Last but not least, provide a way for your guests (and you) to capture the memories. A few disposable cameras scattered around the area will ensure there is one handy at the right time and place. The party only lasts a night, but the memories will last forever.

The list above will help you establish the setting of your event, but a party just isn’t a party without food and refreshments. Run through the following checklist for a few ideas on treats:

• Appetizers – One of the best ways to get the party going, appetizers can really set the mood. It’s Halloween and there’s plenty of sweets to go around, so try making your appetizers a little more salty and savory to let your guests take a break from the sugar.
• Drinks – There is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to drinks, which can range from a pleasant punch to a batch of themed cocktails. The best advice when it comes to drinks is to know your guests and what they expect. Whatever you decide on, make sure to include non-alcoholic drinks for those who won’t be drinking.
• Candy and Desserts – Everyone knows Halloween is all about the sweet! Themed cut-out cookies, cupcakes, actual cakes, pies and more are all acceptable. Random bowls of candy scattered around your party space are a great way to ensure guests don’t go without a bite of something sweet.
• Plates, Cups, and Dishes – Not as exciting as tasty treats, but an important aspect to plan for. Regardless of the foods and drinks you choose, make sure you have the right dishes and cups to serve them all. Labelling and planning ahead of time will pay off in spades when it comes time to party.
